I’ve been on a creative journey now for the entirety of my life as a mother. It’s no coincidence that bringing another human into the world who relied solely on me for comfort, nourishment and care, triggered a deep desire to rediscover who I really was.
And as my children have grown, they have seen me show up, time after time, day after day, to practice all new skills that I wanted to learn. Hand lettering, painting, podcasting, it all has taken so much time to develop these new skills.
But my oldest doesn’t see that at all. What he sees is that my work is ‘perfect.’ And that was keeping him from being creative and exploring his own curiosity. So one day, I decided to show him that nothing I do is perfect every time, and I grabbed some brushes, india ink and some large pieces of paper.
I wanted to show him that I knew how to make messy, unplanned, imperfect work. This piece is what came from that day, and I was so proud of myself for playing outside the lines and creating just for fun with no plan or purpose.
But to my dismay, when I was finished, he said “See?! YOU DO EVERYTHING PERFECT!” And ran off into his room. I was so struck because to me, it was random and silly and very imperfectly created, and I was hoping he could see that too.
I love this print even if it makes my heart ache just a bit remembering that moment. It reminds me that all my work is worthy and that playing outside the lines is where magic lives. This piece has been framed and hanging on my wall ever since and I love it more every time I see it. And I’m so thrilled to share it with you.
I personally sign each print before shipping, sealing in all the juicy vibes from me to you, this one's signed in gold!

Coco
